WebRing News 30, November, 2003 WebRing is RelocatingWebRing is moving from it's humble abode in a museum closet to a first class data center. The process started about a week ago and will contunue for another week. There have been, and will continue to be, periodic system outages while we shuffle and physically move the servers. The physical distance, from Oregon to souther California, means that some servers be offline for extended periods while they are moved. In addition, DNS changes may result in your browser being unable to locate WebRing pages until your local ISP flushes their cache. This normally happens quite rapidly and that process is mostly complete at this time. Why move? WebRing has negotiated a fantastic partnership with Simplenet, and website hosting and co-location facility in southern California. They were a webhosting pioneer and continue to provide cutting edge service, with a real emphasis on customer service - a rare offering these days. In exchange for helping to promote their service with our users Simplenet is housing our servers in their data center. This means improved bandwidth and 24/7 support, backup power, and redundant connectivity to the Internet. We are also several hops closer to most users now. New Features and PoliciesPop-ups are gone!As announced in September WebRing has been phasing out pop-up advertisements. We're now finally there with the exception one last area (datng, chat, singles) that was contracted through the end of the year a long time ago and we're honoring that comittment. We plan to make up for the loss of revenue through increased participation by members in "premium" offerings. Over the next couple of months we'll add a number of extra features that we hope you'll choose to take advantage of. We feel that for now this approach offers the best possible service to the entire community: A free service, (soon) free of pop-up ads, with a rich suite of additional services/features for those that want or need more. The WebRing alert/mail system is nearly complete but has been delayed by the move into the data center. Many of you have had your email addresses verfied in the last month. Thank you! You'll find that your options are much greater in the WebRing alert/mail system coming soon. Have you created/checked your user profile lately, or for supporting members created a profile page? WebRing's user directory is coming soon. Be sure your information is current so you can be included! There is no need to enter a contact email address - The WebRing alert/mail system will make that unnecessary. WebRing is a Community supported systemWebRing is best supported by you, the community. Many that have pitched in have found that the promotional credit they receive can be put to very good use by either featuring the ring in the directory and/or requesting to have their site(s) featured on ring Hub pages. The results are almost always noticeable right away in increased traffic to the ring or site. It's a win-win for us all: Increased visibility for your ring or site and support for WebRing. If you value WebRing and feel you can benefit from an even better system, then we seek your support. Thanks to the 4600+ contributing members WebRing is growing stronger every day! We still offer the best service and support whether you contribute or not.
