Medieval and Renaissance Business and Professional Women (18 Sites, 303 Hits) 04/14/2002
Untitled document

Find in this WebRing the sites of Medieval and Renaissance female merchants and professional women, including but not limited to sites that have pages with information about women in the Middle Ages and/or Renaissance (not excluding mythology related thereto), and shops owned/operated by women.  Topics range as widely as castle tours, costumes, art, dragons, fantasy, jewelry, pottery, medals, armour, horses, shows, faires, exhibitions, religious practices, guilds, lifestyles, female-authored fiction and poetry, all, of course, appropriate to the era(s) in question.  Pictured:  an unattributed, undated (but surely within the first two decades of the 14th century) illustration found at the beginning of Euclid's Elements.  Depicted in this illustration:  a woman (possibly a real woman, possibly the allegorical embodiment of the concept of Geometry) using a compass and square to teach geometry to a group of young monks.  This would have been an unusual occupation indeed for a medieval woman... but not unheard of.
