| Pigeons are found worldwide. There are many species of pigeons with the most variety occurring in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. The term “dove” and “pigeon” are often used interchangeably by enthusiasts. These birds are in the order Columbiformes that is in the Columbidae family of birds. There are at least 300 species known through out the world. No continent, except perhaps the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Sahara desert are without some species of doves or pigeons. This family is divided into 5 subfamilies. Doves and Pigeons can be primarily seed eaters or primarily fruit eaters. Both groups tend to take insects and other small prey when the opportunity presents itself.
